Design Packs A Punch For Boxpark Newcomers
“The independents are up against some top name brands in a space like Boxpark so it’s essential they make an impact,” says Evros Agathou, Creative Director of hospitality design studio, Avocado Sweets.
With 33 food and drink venues in the recently opened Boxpark Croydon site, new independent concept Wine&Deli needed a stand-out look to fit the ethos of their brand.
The brainchild of three local young entrepreneurs, Wine&Deli offers small plates, cured meats and cheeses and a carefully curated wine list from across the globe. The food and drink are high quality, while the experience is all about informality.
To give Wine & Deli the right look and feel, Avocado Sweets created a unique Urban Deco look, combining the best of Croydon old and new. The design takes its influences from the celebrated Art Deco buildings of Croydon’s past - such as the former International Airport and Purley Way Lido - and the current surge of stunning urban graffiti street art which is creating a new vibrant open-air gallery.
Originally conceived in Shoreditch, East London, Boxpark is constructed entirely from refitted shipping containers. The Croydon site, which opened in November, brings together food and drink offerings from established brands with independents.
“Drinking wine and eating cured meats and cheeses is still regarded as a posh thing to do so we wanted a relaxed spot for everyone to try something new. The design is inviting and unpretentious – exactly what we wanted,” says Adam Jackowski, co-founder of Wine & Deli.
“Working with Avocado Sweets was an absolute pleasure. We were on the same page throughout the process and the final design far exceeded our expectations,” he added.
Wine & Deli’s mix of art deco influences with urban cool sees decorative gold Tom Dixon lights, handmade British wallpaper and patterned flooring alongside a ‘flyposter’ wall of vintage posters and graffiti art. White metro tiles, black tables, bistro chairs and a hot-pink trim complete the look.
“The unique mash-up of art deco and urban street is a great fit for the brand’s fusion of youthful energy with fine food and wine, and really packs a punch,” says Evros who led the design. “Injecting personality into such a small space without losing covers is a real design challenge. We played up the element of surprise by laying out vintage posters in a fly poster style and adding graffiti to the decorative elements.”
“We loved working with these visionary local lads to create a design that captures the good times and good vibes of Croydon’s ambitious youth,” he added.
Wine&Deli is a sister restaurant to Brgr&Beer which recently won Time Out’s Love London Awards 2016.
